Workshop Description: Participants will learn the basics of letterpress printing, printing terminology, the printer’s measurement system, how to handset type, and operate treadle operated C&P Platen “Job” press. Students will choose from our vast collection of metal type faces, ornaments & borders, and vintage cuts in order to produce personalized handmade business cards, notecards, or calling cards, to take home with them. The day starts off with an orientation and instruction on how to compose type and printing on a press. The majority of the workshop consists of participants choosing, composing, and printing. Lunch is not provided, but you can brown bag it or purchase something from the Settlement’s Summer Kitchen.
Workshop Outcomes: After completing the workshop, participants will: Take away hand crafted and personalized letterpress ephemera, understand the basics of how to handset and distribute movable lead type, be able to utilize the printer’s measurement system and terminology and have a working knowledge of locking up forms and printing on a press.
General Objectives: Composing and setting Type, locking-up Type on a Press Printing on C&P and a Showcard proof press distributing Type cleaning up. Celebrate your letterpress experience with a show and tell.
